Corfu

For decades visitors have flocked to Corfu, the beauty of the island and the warm hospitality of the local people entice many to return year after year. You will not return home simply with photographs and memories but with the knowledge that you have made new friends.

As the second largest of the Ionian Islands, Corfu is often referred to as the ‘Emerald Isle’ of Greece and not without justification. Mountains and hillsides are densely covered in lush vegetation – so many shades of green that it is impossible to count. In many cases, the trees stretch right to the beach providing blissful natural shade.

Corfu really is the island that has the right location for everyone, romantic hideaways, relaxing peaceful villages, busy tourist resorts and party towns, from budget family rooms to the most luxurious villas, from small family run pensions to huge hotels, the list is endless. We can help you find just what you are looking for.

Eating out is a delight as there are so many options you will be spoiled for choice. The same dish will never taste exactly the same in any two restaurants, many of the traditional recipes have been handed down through generations and every family and chef has their own secret ingredient. Of course you are not limited to Greek food, you will find some excellent continental cuisine, tasty pies and pastries. Eating out for vegetarians can often be a challenge but here you will find that most restaurants have some interesting options. Many of the small ‘tavernas’ will prepare a specific dish for you if you make your request the day before.

For those of you who are interested in culture there are numerous museums, palaces, the fortress and ruins.

Although many of our visitors enjoy spending their time at the beach or lazing around the pool, others prefer to include activities and Corfu will not disappoint you. The island is a walker’s paradise, there are several riding centers who cater for experienced and novices, scuba diving and snorkeling, paragliding, windsurfing, cycling tours, an esteemed golf course, as well as one of the largest water parks in Europe. Car hire or even motor boat hire will enhance your holiday enabling you to visit the hidden gems of the island.

There are some magnificent samples of architecture, many of which are a reminder of the Venetian occupation, particularly within the city itself. Opposite the Old Fortress you will find the cricket pitch and a large Esplanade. It is parallel to the cricket pitch that you will find the Liston which is home to numerous cafeterias. Originally built in 1807 by the French architect Lesseps it is said to have been based on the Rue de Rivoli in Paris. Also in the park (plateia) is a small bandstand and to this day concerts are organized periodically throughout the summer months.
A walk through the maize of ‘kadounia’ (small narrow streets) of the old town is always an interesting experience.

A further bonus is that you can do a little island hopping during your stay in Corfu. The neighboring islands of Paxos and Antipaxos are close enough to join one of the organized tours and visit both, all within the space of a day.

Corfu and Atropa Travel are waiting to welcome you!
